App, game, or real-world experience? How we choose the shape
We start from the goal and the age, not a fashionable shape. Here is what separates an app a child returns to daily, a game that tests a rule, and a real-world experience with no screen at its core.

What gets decided before the shape?
Every project starts from two questions, not a shape already fixed in mind: what goal do we want to change for the child, and who exactly is that child, by age and setting. The shape, meaning whether the work becomes an app, a game, or a real-world experience, answers those two questions. It is not a choice made ahead of them. Start from the shape and you build a solution looking for a problem it fits. Start from the goal and you build a solution designed for the actual problem.
The common trap is picking a shape because it is fashionable, not because it serves the goal and the age. An app gets built because apps are what is popular this year, or a field event gets staged because it photographs well. Either choice can genuinely turn out right, but rightness that arrives by accident differs from rightness that arrives by examination. This article explains the examination we run, and the practical differences between the three shapes we use.
When does an app serve the goal?
An app fits when the goal needs a relationship that stretches across days or weeks, not a single moment that ends and is forgotten. An app is a place a child returns to, carrying content or a space that renews, with an oversight layer the family sees every time rather than once. Jona is a live example of this: a safe video platform a child returns to for content their parents can trust, available to the public today. Noody is another, of a different kind: a safe social space where a child lives ongoing friendships and challenges under full parental oversight, also available to the public today.
What the two share is that the benefit is not a single event. It is a relationship that repeats safely. When that is the description of the goal, the app is the shape that carries it best, because it is the only one of the three built from the start to be opened again and again rather than once.
When is a game the right call?
A game is a system with a rule, an internal goal, and immediate feedback on every attempt. It fits when the core of what we want is mastering that rule through safe, repeated trial: the child tries, gets it wrong, understands why, and tries again with wider knowledge. Not every goal needs this pattern, but when it does, no other shape carries it as well. Take a hypothetical goal, teaching a child to judge distance before crossing a street: an app explaining the rule in text is not enough, but a play system that puts the child through a repeated decision, showing the result of each one instantly, builds the actual sense rather than only the theoretical fact.
The difference between a game and an app here is not the screen. It is the structure: an app carries content to be consumed, and a game carries a system to be practiced. And when we design either one, the same law governs both: story first, then the system or the content is built to serve it, not the other way around.
When does a real-world experience fit?
Some goals lose their value the moment they move to a screen. Shared presence between a child and their family in one place, physical action instead of a touch on glass, an event that gathers families at the same time: these are values no app replaces, however well designed. Treasure Island is a live example of this: a real-world experience that taught children saving through play, delivered in a number of Saudi cities, with no screen at the center of its idea at all.
The youngest ages are a special case within this same shape. For reasons explained in a separate article on designing beyond screens, we prefer voice that is heard and objects that are held passing through the parent for early childhood specifically, rather than a screen that pushes the parent to the margin. Our next device, being prepared for manufacturing today, applies that preference with no screen at all, and sits closer to an extension of a real-world experience than to an app in a different box.
What if the shape is not settled yet?
Not every idea of ours has reached the same stage, and that is worth saying plainly rather than hiding it. Drayesh, a window bringing child and parents closer through a safe virtual friend, is in development today, and its final shape goes through the same stages any piece of our work passes before it reaches a real family. Its status shows that choosing a shape is not the last decision in the journey. It is the first one: after it comes the storyboard, then the gray prototype that tests the shape itself before more time is invested in it.
How does a child's age change the decision?
Age does not change the goal, but it changes what actually reaches the child. A younger child needs a medium that passes through a parent before it passes through their own eyes, which is why the shape at this stage leans toward the tangible and the heard rather than the screen. A child in the middle years enjoys mastering an explicit rule, which is where a game fits better than it does elsewhere. A teenager wants independence and real tools they return to by choice, which is what pulls them toward an app when the goal is a relationship that stretches over time. Where should you start?
If you have a goal and have not settled its shape yet, that is exactly the right place to start from. Do not write "I want an app" or "I want a game" in a first message. Is the choice among the three shapes settled in the first session?
Not finally, not at that moment. The shape we start with is a working hypothesis, one that holds or changes once the work reaches the storyboard and then the gray prototype, the two stages that reveal whether the shape actually serves the goal.
Why not turn every idea into a game, since games attract children?
Because attraction alone does not justify a shape. A game fits when the core of the goal is mastering a rule through attempt, repetition, and instant feedback. If the goal is something else, a game wrapped around it is decoration that does not serve the goal itself.
What happens when more than one shape could serve the same goal?
We choose whichever is cheaper to test first. A drawing on paper reveals the story, and a gray prototype reveals the fun, and both cost less than building a full app or organizing a field experience before we know the idea deserves either one.
